    Bartlett's seems out of place for the area. It's near Michigan City but set aside by a couple of miles sweepingly in the woods. But the food quality, selection and service is all excellent! I'd expect this more in a large city not here! But that's a good thing: an oasis for those living or visiting nearby. That said you will get food from oysters to ahi to Reubens to Bahn Mi. Duck confit? They have it! The food is fresh so they will run out and you're out of luck. That's ok. More places should be like this! Highly recommended.

    Have eaten there a few times with mixed feelings. Restaurant is smallish, located on a scenic stretch of US12 in Beverly Shores IN. It seems to be a popular stop for IL tourists that profligate into the area during the summer months. They can seat around 80-100 patrons inside, and also have outdoor patio style seating. It is a cramped, loud atmosphere, with a bar located on one side. The parking lot is also undersized with patrons having to leave their vehicles precariously parked out along the edge of the road (US12). Their menu has some high-brow items on it, a good number of which are grill related/prepared, including a grilled lettuce salad which is not the greatest. I'd heard various good things from coworkers who've eaten there before I stopped, and my first experience was a good one. Food was cooked right and flavorful. Subsequent visits, however, were disappointing. Overcooked burgers (burned actually), flavorless apple-fennel slaw, and a few other things I won't bore you with. Management is non-versed in personable customer service skills, if they have any at all. A "Hugh" is listed at the business' website as their contact. Hugh doesn't answer email, apparently. The place may be worth a try for you, idk. If you don't mind loud, cramped, crowded restaurants, with inconsistent meal quality then go for it. Prices are average for the area and serving size. Two stars.

    Bartletts is on 12 not 20! One star for yelp in getting me lost!!!!!! Food was decent. I had to eat quick because the Mosquitos were swarming! Do not sit outside!

    A surprise find in an out of the way locale with quality food preparation and an exceptional beer selection. I am also a big fan of the Beer drinking buck logo. I had the crab and smoked shrimp cakes. YUMMY. Perfect panko coating and a delicious sauce made from smoked tomatoes. It was just right with the Founders I PA. The fish and chips were lightly battered and the fish (haddock?) fresh tasting and flaky. I am looking forward to our next trip to Indiana so I can come here again.

    After many years without a menu change I would say they're due for an update with some fresh new options. Food is good and reliable, atmosphere is loud, service is good, but I'd say prices are a bit high. It's just time to revamp the menu and bring in some new items.

    Along US 12 in Beverly Shores, if you see the sign of the beer drinking deer, you have arrived at Bartlett's. Jesse T. was kind enough to recommend this road house during my recent business trip to the area also known as the Chicago Hamptons. This is where the locals and vacation crowd would both feel right at home. It's upscale, yet casual. It features dark woods and an expansive menu and beer selection. I eventually ended up with red wine, as it went well with my super delicious pot roast dish. I'm originally from Iowa, so it was either going to be this or meat loaf. The service was strong out of the gate, significantly sagged in the middle, yet regained its legs at the end. That's probably the only thing that kept Bartlett's just short of awesome for me.

    I loved the calamari because it was the best have had,how could that be possible. The turkey sandwich with apple slices was so unique fresh and good. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the shiitake appetizer. Two out of three is stellar! Be advised not to sit by the window if flies bother you.

    Just really loved this place so much it tuned into a splurge night for our family. Kids loved playing out on the play area and I loved the drinks. I want to give it 5 stars but even as the menu items were modern, interesting, and sounded delicious they fell a bit short on taste for each of us at the table. Very kid friendly and good service.

    We ate here on Friday afternoon. Todd our server was awesome. Perfect type of server not all over us but always attentive. The food was great. I recommend the club and grilled wedge salad. Mac and cheese is good. You can't go wrong.

    OMG...this place is amazing! I've been here twice in two weeks. I like that it is a laid back atmosphere although it would be nice if it was a little bigger. I had the meatloaf, which I'm pretty sure I could eat every day for the rest of my life and with those brussel sprouts shut the front door! We also ordered the pecan tart for dessert. That was amazing as well. Pretty sure I could also just eat desserts from there for dinner. Beer and drink selection is great. My husband had 2 blood marys last time we went so those must have been good as well. It's also a nice scenic drive from where we live, so worth the drive and the money.

    So disappointing!! We have been here before and loved it. Unfortunately, last night the quality of the food was terrible. A rib dish came out burnt to a crisp and inedible. They remade it and over cooked that and still charged us. The steak we had was also over cooked. Have loved the chicken schnitzel in the past but that was also over cooked and almost devoid of the sauce we love! Our server was lovely and so friendly. It's unfortunate that the kitchen sent out such poor quality food.

    I came here based on a referral from a great friend, I am very glad he recommended Bartlett's to me. I ordered the Amish Chicken and Waffles. The dish was hot and the presentation was excellent. I highly recommend Bartlett's.

    One of my new favorite restaraunts. Blue point oysters 18 a doz. Had crab cakes with smoked shrimp. Wifey had ahii tuna caviche. Bottle of wine. Good stuff and only 15 minutes from home.

    Stopped for lunch, drawn in by the cute sign and good reviews on Yelp. Cute little tavern, inside was nice but the patio was better. Totally dead at lunchtime on a Tuesday. Unique trendy menu with upscale pub food. I tried the burger, which was good but not great because it was overcooked. Everyone liked their meals (chicken salad sandwich, reuben, ban mi) but no one was exactly raving either. Shoestring fries were better than the regular ones. The atmosphere made up for lacking in the food dept and I'd definitely give it another try because lots of things on the menu sounded good. They had a great kids menu with lots of mini versions of grownup food and healthy stuff too, although my three year old refused to order anything and instead enjoyed scooping pea gravel with the trucks they had out and going in and out of the small tree house (nice touch)! Definitely family friendly but the upscale food and beer selection would make it an adult destination as well.

    I was looking for a food adventure and this place did not disappoint! It's a little off the beaten path but absolutely worth finding. The food was absolutely delicious. We started with the tuna ceviche. The tuna was rare to perfection and plentiful. The meal came with crackers and housemade pub cheese. Dad had the 5 hour pot roast and mom had the lamb shank and gnocchi. Both we're just melt in your mouth tender and savory. I had the chicken schnitzel with mashed potatoes and vegetables. Absolute heaven. Lemony and capery and oh so good. We finished off with the Cafe Chocolate. It's not to be missed. I'd skip the Bloody Mary, for a featured drink it was pretty bland, more concerned with the dressing than the flavoring. And the service was a touch slow but it was a packed Friday night. I can't wait to go back when their deck is open!!

    Husby and I were here for lunch today. He had a special sandwich on rye and I had fish & chips. The service was excellent and the food met our expectations. The best part of our meal was never at any time feeling rushed. One suggestion... Fix the potholes in you parking lot!

    Unbelievable menu - pure gourmet in what looks like a dump from the outside. A packed parking lot was a good clue that something special was going on in this dive. Great craft beers, an awesome Manhattan, ceviche and wild mushroom soup to die for along with a burger that eats more like a meatloaf. What a find - proof that God loves me and wants me to be happy

    This place is fantastic. The best ribs I've ever had. They home make Michigan cherry BBQ sauce that was just ridiculous. Great service, and great beer also, which makes it a 5 star review for sure.

    Well, I slammed this place when it looked like it was taking a turn for the worse, so I wanted to make sure to let everyone know it's apparent they have reversed their course and they are now back on track. Service was excellent, ambiance was very nice, food was great, and drink selection was substantial. They have also changed their menu to include a little more of the sophistication that had seemingly disappeared at one point. I'm super thankful I stopped to see them at County Line Orchard's Farm to Table function or I probably would not have come back. I'm glad I did and I'm looking forward to my next opportunity to dine there.

    This place was recommended to us by friends. I have to say that we were not impressed. Loud and overpriced with poor service. We got the Deviled Egg starter and I have honestly never seen eggs so small in my life. My steak was also on the small side and pretty dry. The salmon special looked good and my girlfriend enjoyed it. Overall I was expecting more from this place. The $70 bill would be no problem for what we got if the food was better and the and the service was prompt. If I'm ever back in Beverly Shores we'll probably skip Barletts.

    I enjoyed the selection of regional craft beers available here. The mussels appetizer was tasty (albeit with tiny little mussels), but where Bartlett's really stood out was with their entrees. We ordered the salmon du jour and the All Day Long lamb shank, both of which knocked our socks off. Maybe I was really hungry, but the lamb shank turned out to be one of the two best meals I've ever had. Our wait was long and our table by the kitchen door wasn't ideal, but hey, that stuff happens. Overall, we had a nice time and delicious food. Would definitely recommend.

    Been to Bartlett's a couple times now and figured I should finally chime in. A nice and cozy small joint that caters mostly to the people of Beverly Shores. That being said, you would think this establishment would have better food in general. Drinks are fantastic. Has a better beer list than a lot of upscale joints in Chicago. Hostess was cold and unwelcoming but Hugh probably has to be the best waiter in the region. On to the food. Everything. The fish, the tacos, and the caprese flat bread were all very underwhelming. The house salad was the only thing that wasn't flat due to the dressing. Now I remember why we only visit a couple times of year. Even with being so close to the beach, I'd rather make a 20 minute drive for some genuinely GOOD cuisine.

    Been here a couple of times when visiting my parents in Chesterton. It's quite a unique place for the area, tucked away off Route 12 right down from the Dunes. Great beer list, including Bell's on tap and some 3 Floyd's options. I had the pecan crusted whitefish, which is fabulous. It's more like a finely chopped pecan topping, not so overpowering it takes away from the fish. Served with veggies, a unique cole slaw with slices of Granny Smith apples, and potato. Servers have no problem letting you swap your potato for more veggies if you wish. This place is small and cozy, but it also has an outdoor patio in the back. Definitely stop by when you're looking for something a step up from burgers and pizza when in the area.

    When I'm craving a Bloody Mary, I head to Bartlett's in Beverly Shores. They have concocted their own glorious mix; thick, rich, with a little kick. The salt n pepper spicy rim is a nice touch, too. But the best part is the garnish: pickle, cherry tomato, cheese, olive, venison jerky, and (my favorite) a caper berry. Ask for a shot of stout or a dark ale back for a real treat. Like many bloodies, it's a meal in and of itself. In fact, you can find the description of the "Buckin' Good Bloody Mary" on the appetizer menu. As for the rest of the menu, gourmet comfort food is the theme. If you're on a diet, don't even bother. Everything is rich and delicious and too good to resist. My personal favorites are the andouille corn dogs, mac n cheese, and the pot roast. They have weekly specials (South of the Border, Asian Fusion, etc) and a few rotating seasonal items. For the past year or so the quality of the food hasn't been consistent...it just depends on who's in the kitchen. But the service is outstanding, and the bartenders can whip up anything you hanker for. The patio is great for either a romantic dinner or a group of friends, and there's a new outdoor bar. A few years ago, I wouldn't have hesitated to give Bartlett's five stars, but there have been a few too many goof ups on the food lately. If you've never been, it's definitely worth a try.

    Blue Point oyster are big and fresh. Loved the ahi tuna sushi grade in a glass, with avocado's. Staff is always very friendly but it is a bar. So if you can get passed the look of comfort and cozy than you will love this place. Recommend this to try, it was nice with really good food.

    We stopped here for an appetizer and drinks, as the entree choices seemed like they might be more than we wanted to spend. I got a bloody mary, which was really excellent: not too spicy, great flavor to the bloody mix, and awesome garnishes (venison jerky and a pickled green bean among the other usual suspects- very cool). Our appetizer was house-made chips topped with tasty cheese sauce and chorizo. Simple, fairly cheap, and delicious. I loved the atmosphere inside. Cozy, woodsy, but not tacky. I was surprised that it came off as classy and overall seemed to live up to the "gourmet" in its name. Definitely give this place a try.

    Based on the creative dishes on the menu I had high hopes. The meal started OK with a nice seat on the outdoor patio and good drinks. The appetizers tasted alright but we had to remind the waitress to bring us napkins and utensils. Also, as my lunch partner had ordered a small plate as her main entrée, when it arrived with my appetizer it threw off the timing of the meal. My main dish arrived with old fries (probably made before the fish) and undercooked fish that looked OK but had raw batter in the middle. I left most of it. I expected more for the prices Barlett's was charging and won't be going back.

    Went here on a date night and we really dug the atmosphere. Dim lighting, vintage feel, dive bar-esque, but with class. At 6:30 we only waited about 10 min to be seated. We sat in the bar. Waitress was attentive and offered suggestions and helped us choose. Good craft beer selection on draft and in bottles. We had the deviled eggs with crispy pork belly and the wings for an appetizer. Eggs were good. Sounded better than they tasted, but we're good. Wings were PHENOMENAL! They smoke them and then use a classic buffalo sauce and serve with Gorgonzola and celery. Best I've ever had. I'd go back just for the wings. I should have gotten 12 and made them my dinner. I had the fish n chips made with a beer batter using Bell's Two-hearted Ale (one of my favorites). Again, sounded better than it tasted. I should've done a steak but the description hooked me. Fish was good, not great. Cole slaw was mediocre and more vinegary than creamy. Fries were so-so. My wife got the chicken schnitzel and it was okay. Lacked seasoning, could have had a crispier outside. Mashed potatoes were good. The dessert menu, like the dinner menu, had good variety. I had blueberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream which was like homemade and my wife's key lime tart was excellent. I'd go back for the wings and dessert and try a steak. Cool place.

    Yelp--- what would I do without you? Stopped by this place on our way to Michigan. The husband chuckled as we pulled up, thinking that we had pulled into a dump. Little did he know that we were walking into a cool spot with a respectable collection of craft beers and unique takes on international dishes, tailored to fit this tavern atmosphere. We experienced some indecisiveness as we skimmed through the menu and ultimately decided on the wings with crumbled blue cheese sauce, these heavenly grilled cheese bites that were accompanied by some tomato bisque dipping sauce, the croque madame and the cubano --- all great choices and was a wonderful surprise during this mini road trip.

    First impression typical american grill bar ambience. we ordered specials from that day. chicken bacon sandwich wrap, mini lamb burgers, sausage corn dogs, fish & chips, shrimp margarita with local drafts and wine. The moment we had the first bite of the appetizers we were in love with the food. everything mentioned above can be rated five stars. I have been to many american restaurants, but this has been the best restaurant so far. definitely worth trying...:)

    Food was good. Place was super busy. My only complaint and the reason for only 3 stars... The owner stood around and did nothing to help customers or servers, who were swamped. The servers did the best they could but the restaurant was under staffed for the volume. Help out dude.

    I have been here maybe 5 times- food is quite good (club sandwich is excellent), beer list is admirable, and the atmosphere is really nice, especially on the patio. One star off, since our waiter Todd was incredibly scatterbrained. First we got regular fries instead of the sweet potato fries we ordered, and he had to be reminded twice to bring out the right ones- which ended up being burnt. Then when he went to run my credit card he didn't come back for 15 minutes, and I had to have another waiter chase him down- only to learn he ran my card for another one of his tables. Since he was unable to show me that he voided the transaction, I'm *hoping* for no duplicate charges. That said, it won't deter me from coming back. This restaurant is the absolute best in the immediate area, and a real gem for the lakeshore.

    Every time I've passed the Bartlett's sign, I wanted to go. I mean, how cute is that deer chugging a beer? Now, I'm not so sure I should've. A. WHY IS IT SO EXPENSIVE? I swear I only got a couple of beers and some appetizers and I walked out of there spending over $50 with tip. The hell? B. WHY IS EVERYTHING SO BLAH? The 'wings' are way too smoky fried chicken pieces, the chili was just meh, and the fried cheese curds tasted like NOTHING. (The grilled cheese bites though? Those were BOMB.) The only thing that Bartlett's has going for it is its beer list. It's not crazy impressive, but does boast some quality Midwest craft brews. Verdict: Go for the beer and the grilled cheese and save your money and appetite for something else (somewhere else).

    I have been to Bartlett's three times now and I don't think I really like it. The service has always been fine and the atmosphere is nice, but I have not been impressed with the food. I will break down what I have ordered: Fish burrito: Contained all the fixings that would normally be wrapped up in a burrito: pico de gallo, lime crema, beans, and...dill. Wait, no, dill does not belong in a burrito. It made for a really strange flavor. Macaroni and cheese: This was okay, but really salty. My boyfriend tried it and thought it was really tasty. I just tasted a lot of salt. Perhaps the chef has a heavy hand with dill and salt. Mussels and fries: The mussels were cooked well, but came with very little broth. The broth that was in the bowl tasted really bitter and mustard was sprayed all over the top of the mussels. The fries were covered in raw garlic. Really strange flavor combinations at work here. I think that whoever is in charge of the menu tries to over-complicate things. These items could have all been good if they were just prepared simply without extra ingredients that don't belong. I think that Bartlett's has a lot of potential, but they should keep things simple.

    Took the first Distillery/Brewery Bus Trip and plan to do it again! Began with an excellent choice of meal from select menu, delicious Bloody Mary and an Ironwood Beer (Valpo) at Bartletts. Bus trip included selection of several crafted beers including my favorite SunKing SunLight and waters. First stop was the incredible Journeyman Distillery (Three Oaks, MI) where the owner took us through the distillation process and we were able to sample several different spirits. Check review for Journeyman - 5 Stars all the way. Next stop was Greenbush Brewery in Sawyer, MI - was able to have some nosh and tasted some of their fine crafted beers. Great server got a great tip!! Check them out! Last stop was Tapistry Brewery in Bridgman, MI - beer drinkers favorite stop according to cheers on the bus! Check review. Back on the bus, Gary (owner/chef of Bartletts) and his wife Nichole (Bistro 157/chef/owner) surprised us with gift bags - not going to spoil the surprise but sweet, salty and Merlot in a great bottle/glass/cozie. Three cheers for the bus driver - Randy - who put up with all the ruckus and maintained a great personality/attitude throughout. Big thank you to those who organized this bus trip - it was absolutely exceptionally well done. On a personal note, Gary explained the process of dinner specials to me since I have, in the past, complained loud and long about not seeing them early. Considering we have that long drive AND the food is worth the round trip, I appreciated his information and can now rest assured that with the new website caretaker and my own patience, specials will be up as fast as possible. Definitely take the time to stop here, dine/drink and chat with the friendly folks and if you get the opportunity to take a bus tour with these folks, get behind me and my husband!!!

    Work for a large Chicago restaurant group so here is my fair thought: Service: Needs a step up in the game... Very poor... I noticed the boys have a hard time multi-tasking with tables and there have been many write ups about the front of the house... Bussers need to get in the game and get to the waters, ketchups, mustards, cracker baskets, etc.... be the backups for the servers in the event of busy times.... Computer systems BOH: You need one on the patio so it will save your servers some time of going back and forth to create some efficiency... Also as a part of the service modifiers to the foods will not get missed as they did in our case... BOH: They were slow on the apps as the food was late coming out due to being busy.... Food: Calamari was very oily and terrible. Burgers were ordered medium came out well done (mine was good) presentation was bad as the cheese wasn't quite melted on the burger... I can do better on my grill at home... Pretzel bun was burnt on the edges.... Salad was good we ordered the spinach.... The bar area is nice and I can see by the write ups that they have a nice setup... Management: The manager was accommodating and removed the food they screwed up off the bill... But the bottom line is they should focus on the quality of the food and get those kids moving so that the Manager can be checking on the customers and keeping an eye on the line as the food comes up... Cut down on the menu and get good at a few things rather than putting out all complicated things... You may do better... I will give you one more shot in all fairness as everyone deserves a second chance... See you soon...

    I am giving Bartlett's 3 stars for the feel of the room, the beverage selection, and the service. The service should get 5 stars because the staff is always friendly and works very hard. However, there are some questionable moves being made in the kitchen that I can no longer ignore after being duped two times in less than a year. My wife and I have tried very hard to make this off-the-beaten-path gem our go-to place for date day but the food continues to disappoint each and every time. Two times in a row we have ordered entrees with, and I paraphrase, "fresh seasonal vegetables" and "fresh summer vegetables." Both times said entrees were served with what looked like frozen stir-fry vegetables. Do not try to tell me that crinkle-cut carrots and grey colored string beans were freshly sliced up in the kitchen only moments before being sprinkled atop a grill then slid onto a flatbread special of the day. This travesty just happened today at lunch and I could not hold back any longer after experiencing a similar occurrence only months prior. How can an owner or a chef allow this to happen? Should the kitchen run out of summer vegetables would it break the food-cost budget to run down to Jewel and buy some squash, zucchini, and onions to grill then throw on top of a flatbread. Fresh grilled vegetables would have been lovely atop this flatbread with chorizo and the few eyedrops of tomato sauce we were served today. Chesterton High School probably serves better vegetables to their students than what was put on top of the flatbread today. I shake my head in disgust at this kind of trickery that occasionally happens at "gourmet" grills. All this did not sit well in my stomach when we left. I also had the Ahi Tuna Ceviche which was nice but can I trust the description of "sushi grade tuna" when frozen vegetables are described as fresh grilled summer vegetables? Every rumble of my stomach is like an anxious tremor as I prepare for a violent protest to erupt... I know I have groaned on a bit and my long-windedness may seem a bit overdone but the food served should match the description on the menu/specials list. No longer can I trust what I read at Bartletts. And I am upset about this! It's a cool tavern and I like the idea of a glass of cognac in the winter time there. But is it worth the risk? Today was getting busy but our server and her busboy were spot on and attentive. Hard workers do not deserve to be affected by absolutely ridiculous moves executed by the kitchen as what my wife and I experienced today. I hope Bartlett's will not toss this review aside and roll their eyes. Making sure the food matches the menu seems like an easy enough fix and not too much to ask from a patron who would love to spend more time there.

    We tried out Bartlett's tonight for the first time. The restaurant was packed and loud and our table top was uneven causing it to shake throughout our meal. The dining area reminded us more of a lodge than a upscale restaurant. Those are the reasons that I didn't give 5 stars. We started off with the crab cake which was very good. Next, we had the oysters Rockefeller. Talk about delicious. My husband, who claims he doesn't eat oysters even loved them. They are in this amazing cream sauce with spinach and bacon. Just superb. Then my husband ordered the steak frites which he enjoyed. I oredered the salad that had apples, strawberries, pork belly, Gorgonzola, and white balsamic vinaigrette. Maybe the best salad I have had in my life. So well balanced and done just right. While all the food was great, the oysters and salad were devine and as I like to call crave-able as in I will be craving them often... So good!

    What a gem, would consider making the drive from Oak Park JUST to dine here and then drive back. Nice ambiance, food (only had apps) was solid, good beer list.

    This place is awesome! We were actually going to go to New Buffalo for lunch before enjoying a beach day with friends in Beverly Shores. Traffic did not allow for us to venture further, so I found this spot on yelp! Cute and funky inside....REally nice. There was a beer fest going on on the patio, so we did not get to enjoy our lunch outside. The inside was nice (a bit tight in some places). Our server/busser/host were all great and helpful. Apparently, we ordered the top apps on the menu, and they were all phenomenal. I loved, loved, loved the pork flatbread! Wow! The combination of ingredients was perfect. The corn dogs were also amazing, and beautifully presented. The wings were quite good, and my husband and kids devoured them. The sweet potato fries were fine (not the best version). I cannot wait to return!

    I'm surprised to find that I haven't reviewed this place yet. Bartlett's is our go to stop after we've taken our dog to the dunes. I admit, I haven't been yet this year, but we have enjoyed it several times. The food is good and far better than your average bar food (which was what we were expecting the first time we stopped in), the service is always friendly, we can sit on the patio with our dog and they have a good selection of mostly local (or local-ish) beers. Well worth a stop if you're passing through.

    I've been around from the beginning to see the menu change a couple times. Some things have always been on it, yet others have left and re-emerged, however, the specials are where it's at! I recently went on "pasta night" and had a sea scallop pasta special and it was the best pasta dish I have ever eaten, bar none. Their drinks are innovative to go along with such a varying menu, from pub food to fine dining! Whatever it is you are hungry for, Bartlett's will have something for you!

    After a day at St. Joe's, we needed a dinner place on the way home. We were hoping for something not as touristy as some of the beachside spots, but with some good cooking at decent prices. Bartlett's looked like a good gamble, so to Beverly Shores we went! Cozy interior, felt very woodsy. The menu had tons of great choices-- we ended up going with the grilled cheese bites and the full rack of ribs. They were awesome! The goat cheese tomato bisque with the grilled cheese was creamy and delicious. The rack of ribs was DELICIOUS. Perfectly grilled/smoked with a sweet cherry bbq sauce. Will definitely come back when I'm coming home from a day at the beach.

    Sat in outdoor patio. Server Melanie was as good as it gets. Bus boy was spot on. Food was great. Had chicken snitzel and smoked salmon salad. Wow!! Nice spot in Rt 12. Worth the drive.

    Our trip to Bartlett's included hot wings, crab cakes, the reuben with the shoestring potatoes, the sirloin wrap with fries, child's fish and chips, and a child burger. Everything was seriously phenomenal. The hot wings were mildly hot, the blue cheese dip was chunky and flavorful. The crab cakes were delicious (maybe my favorite thing), the reuben was stacked with thick corned beef and the house kraut was flavorful while not overpowering. The sirloin wrap was a cooked medium and hubby loved it. The fish and chips for children included two huge pieces of fish. The child's burger was overcooked in our opinion, but we're used to that. Both kid's meals included a fruit salad. Nice touch. I ate most of the fruit salads and it was actually really tasty! The service was friendly but not intrusive. The bathroom could use a dusting... there were dust strings hanging from the ceiling and light fixtures, but that's a minor detail IMO. Great suggestion! Oh, and everything, with a 20% tip came to $82.00. Pricey. Probably not a place we could afford frequently, but worth it for a couple times a year. I took one star away after much consideration only because while the meal was fantastic, $82.00 is more of a "dinner" cost than a lunch cost. I'd like to see the prices just a little cheaper for sandwich/fries.

    Here's a good review that I'm hoping everyone would enjoy. We were a family of 8 which included a 1 and 3 year old. Bartlett's was very accommodating. Seated with our order taken upon arriving after we've settled in. We are from Chicago so we've been exposed to various types of cuisine. We are not foodies or high maintenance, but I have to say the food was very good. Between the chicken & waffles to the pot roast to the tuna nicoise we all enjoyed our meals and drinks. Special hats off to our server Monica. Well done and great work getting everything out in time with two little kiddos.

    Hurray for Bartlett's! Really hoping to find another place that was as good as the Miller Bakery Cafe in Miller Beach and I've found it. Buried in a quiet little road between Gary and Michigan city you'll find Bartlett's Gourmet Grill. Really old school yet classy little place with lots of oak and smell of smokey bbq meat as you come in. Really decent selection of wine and beer, including local craft beer. They also offer the some of the old favorites from the Miller Cafe like the corn bread custard and sweet potato fries. We had both along with a patty melt and andouille sausage corn dogs and fresh raw oysters. Absolute best? The corn dogs. Wow. You have to try these. Best street type food that you can have. Second would be the patty melt. My wife said that it's the best one she's ever had. Finally, i asked the chef to give me a taste portion of the venison chili (she was happy to do for free) and it was also really good. For beer, I had the Samuel Smith's Paddy Porter, although I actually asked for the Bell's porter by the way. But the Paddy came thru with rich malt and bold taste that I was looking for. Then I finally got my Bell's porter. Damn good. Best porter that I've ever had. Really. It's really not too far from Chicago and worth a trip. If you are nearby, it's a must. 5 stars for awesome food and beer and I'll forgive the beer mixup.

    We visited Bartletts for a birthday dinner last week for the first time and were thoroughly impressed. The service and waitresses were excellent. The food was fantastic and is now some of our favorite in NWI. The night we went, there was cocktail tasting in the outdoor area which made te birthday dinner even better. We plan on frequenting Bartletts in the future!

    Stopped in for a late lunch and found this place to be pleasant. Service was above average as was the food. Price is semi-high for the area, but cheap by Chicago standards. Decor inside and out is pretty nice. It's a bar-restaurant where you can take the family, or pop in for a cocktail or beer. Nice alternative to some of the tired Michigan City beer and burger joints!

    Great food and service in what from the outside looks like a shabby place. The food is delicious and probably the best you can find around Indiana Dunes. Try the Bloody Mary, it's delicious! The only reasons I didn't give it a 5-star are because they don't take reservations and it's a bit too noisy.

    Great food, great ambiance. Very nice patio. This is our favorite place in NW Indiana. My husband's favorite bloody Mary and delicious food. Try the Vietnamese Bahn Mi and duck tacos. Delish. The black bean burger was a little too smokey for my taste but everything else has been great.

    What a fun find while vacationing in the area. Pulled Pork Flatbread Pizza - perfect balance of sweet and savory on chewy, airy bread. Amazing depth of flavor in the shrimp and grits, but the serving size of grits is teeny-tiny, more like a garnish. Yummy sweet potato fries. Hangar steak was well seasoned and cooked perfectly. Great service.

    I've experienced better in the price range. Bartlett's is quite decent, but I'm rating the overall experience. The food we've had at Bartlett's (Seafood and Veggie dishes) the few times we've been there was alright (though we have to be on our toes when ordering), but we don't like being there due to the busy, close quarters of the establishment. The food is 3 1/2 Star, the atmosphere 1 Star, and the pricing is on the higher side for what you get. Interior is loud with uncomfortable seating -- I prefer not to dine while crowded together, sometimes elbow-to-elbow, with absolutely NO intimacy to be had. I would like to love Bartlett's, but just can't -- due to feeling crowded-in, the noise level, and we loathe hearing or seeing a TV when dining out (theirs is in the lounge, immediately adjacent to the main dining area). And dining out on their deck, alongside a moderately busy little highway isn't appealing. We trend healthy in our diet -- so no salty, fatty or fried foods. And we avoid dairy protein (cheese, cream, milk, etc.). Their menu has grown, thankfully, offering more choices for diners who prefer healthy fare that's not overly salted or fried. With care, you can remain meat and dairy free if need be, though it's a bit challenging. Classic Ciabatta (an item on Bartlett's menu) contains milk, whereas Flatbread does not. And sometimes the descriptions are misleading; roasted red potatoes come out more like oily french-fry nuggets. Weather & timing permitting, we prefer grabbing personal pizzas from the Rolling Stone Baker (at Broadway & Rte 12), then drive 1/2 mile to eat at the lake front. Bartlett's could do a killer business with a small Flatbread menu that allows customers to order according to their tastes, building upon Aioli or Pesto bases, adding Grilled Chicken or Salmon, etc. (the California Grill at Disney's Contemporary Resort does just that, and it's a hit!). I go way back with this building, when it was a lounge called The Trophy Room, and then a tavern called Bruno's. It's nice to see something there, thriving, even if it's not my favorite. Wish the Red Lantern Inn was still standing -- Bartlett's would have completely rocked in that location!

    Our riding crew stops at Bartlett's on our trips down Highway 12 along the lakeshore. They have about a half-dozen beers on tap at any given time, including some from craft brews; I had Bell's Two Hearted Ale yesterday. While most of the menu caters to meat eaters, there are vegan options. I split the balsamic grilled vegetables with orzo (on the dinner menu) for an afternoon snack. The pesto sauce gave it a nice depth of flavour. A few months ago they had a grilled veggie wrap on the menu. Service seemed odd yesterday; the servers were bringing out a drink or two at a time, rather than taking them all on a tray at once. Not a big deal, just strange. The patio was perfect for the unseasonably warm afternoon.

    Tucked in an unassuming roadside shack on a quiet wooded road, only the parking lot full of cars would indicate to the uninitiated that Bartlett's is NWI's finest new restaurant in years. My first meal there was so good, that it was, without a doubt, the best meal I had in 2009 (and there was some pretty stiff competition!). Bartlett's is the latest restaurant from the well-respected team that gave us the perennially excellent Miller Bakery Cafe. Like is predecessors, Bartlett's offers creative and interesting food in a quirky and trendy atmosphere, though the owners made the delightful decision to emphasize the quirky aspects of the place. The restaurant is very compact, with a lot of tables jammed into a very small dining area. The result is one of the noisier dining rooms you'll visit, but it's never too loud. The whole place is decorated like a hunting lodge in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, minus the stuffed animals. The waiters wear T-shirts that look like they're from a family reunion, adding to the kitsch factor. The whole ambience is delighful, and a bit disarming, which might just help the menu to consistently exceed expectations. The whole menu takes a spin on comfort food by offering a gourmet flair. The chili cheese fries (my favorite appetizer) are turned on end by starting with perfectly-cooked sweet potato fries and topping it with hearty venison chili and cheese curds. Simply amazing! The house bloody mary is also good, with just the right amount of spice, and a stick of venison jerky in place of a stalk of celery. The entrees are quite varied, and each one of them is excellent, with generous portions. I was lucky on the night of my first visit to encounter the pasta special, which was a farfalle with spinach and seafood in a Pernod cream sauce. I wish it were part of the regular menu, because it was--without a doubt--the best bowl of pasta I have ever had anywhere. Even after almost a year, that meal stands out as a truly remarkable experience. So, if you're in the mood for some quirky gourmet cuisine, and you don't mind dining elbow-to-elbow with the adjacent table, Bartlett's is an experience not to be missed.

    Stopped in on Monday after a fun evening with friends who live in the neighbourhood. Every item that came out to our table looked fantastic. I myself enjoyed the Croque Madame (Black forest ham & imported gruyere, bechamel sauce on toasted brioche). Our service was attentive and on top of things. My only problem... the Reflective Silver Tables (seriously - energy problem solved) Table Cloth would be appropriate.

    Every meal I have had at the Bartlett Grill has been delicious. The interior is like the location woodsy and rural. At the most recent visit I was truly impressed with the quality of the calamari and the oyster appetizers. The flavor and presentation was excellent. I usually order the special, Sunday's Fish was grilled to perfection and served with tasty veggies. The place is cozy and welcoming. The service is always friendly.

    This place makes you feel like you're on the edges of Cape Cod. There was a cat friend who came to eat with us. We named him/her Daisy. We came to Bartlett's right after the beach, hazy and hungry. For starters, we shared the crab cakes. These really surprised me and honest to god, came with one of the most unique aiolis I've experienced. It was bright white yellow and laden with lemon zest - It was sweet and tart with twinges of bitter lemon peel. The crab cakes were delectable. We then shared the tilapia tacos. These were also a nice light and summery choice. One filet of tilapia lay perched on each pan warmed tortilla. Atop of the fish was a cabbage slaw. One thing I despise on fish tacos are any weird sauces of any sort. These thankfully had none! Our tacos were served with homemade potato chips, also delicious. We would definitely come back here if in the area! *Hint: For dessert, forgo restaurant options and head south on Highway 12 until you hit a gas station on the right. They serve soft-serve ice-cream cones that are just about AMAZING.

    A country walk must end with a proper meal. Choosing your restaurant is about as important as choosing the trail that gets you there. While we had more room for improvisation with our walk -- Something Kiwi loops, twists and turns through Beverly Shores hilly residential neighborhoods, and puddle jumps through a marshland -- the compass was pointed to Bartlett's as the dinner destination from the start. At prime dinner hour on a Saturday evening, there was a short wait for a table, which is never really a disappointment for those who enjoy saddling up to the bar. Saddle up we did and saddled up we stayed. For drinks, a meal, and more drinks (over the course of more than 5 hours). A selection of about 8 draft beers was accompanied by a long list of bottled ones. While there was hope for more Indiana brews, the list at least covered the Midwest and didn't just have the obvious choices (312, Oberon, etc.). Bells 10,000 batch was the highlight of the beers. Crab cakes started the meal. While the cakes themselves weren't the best I've had, the cherry salsa that topped them made the dish. Still, I'd stick with the oysters that followed (and likely double that order) next time. Blue Point oysters: raw. On the side: fresh horseradish, lemon, and a traditional mignonette sauce made untraditional with red wine vinegar instead of white. These crisp flavors will surely be a summer staple when I sprint from shore to (bar)stool. I followed my surf with a traditional turf: steak frites, medium rare. A great cut of meat. Shoestring potatoes. Zero complaints. In lieu of dessert, we sampled W H Harrison, an Indiana whiskey. (Warning: a whiskey neat was likely 3-4 shots.) While I could end my review of Bartlett's here, I would be leaving out a big part of the experience if I failed to mention the truly charming staff, in particular Kim and Jim, who will be a big draw for our return. Jim, a father-former Chicago urban planner-future English teacher-bartender, had as much zest for stories about the region as he did with his whiskey pour: a lot. Kim, a mother-world traveler-and almost our ride home (Krazy Cab would not receive as many stars as Bartletts in a Yelp review - 'nuff said), was as curious about our lives as we were about hers. A true sweetheart who bestowed us with the gift of two glasses and a beer cozy at the end of the evening. My Bartlett's glass on the shelf is already beckoning me back for another visit.

    Bartlett's has a cool, dark wood atmosphere with an amazing beer selection. The food is outstanding, and unique. We eat here regularly when the business has visitors. It's more "upscale" yet casual for a lot of places in Michigan City. The focus is definitely on meat. I think their pork dishes are excellent. My favorite thing I think I ever had here was the chicken schnitzel. When I lived in Germany as a teen, I would kill a schnitzel, pomme frittes and salat meal. It was my favorite; the meat/grease/bread crumbs would make this kind of light gravy and you could drag the french fries through it as a bonus. Whenever I found a German restaurant in the states I would look to see if they had a schnitzel. Most of the time, it was passable, but never had the qualities that "took me back." Folks, I am here to tell you, the chicken schnitzel was the closest thing to anything I had in Germany. It was totally awesome! Sure, it would've been much better had it been made from baby cow, but I would kill a plate of that chicken schnitzel RIGHT NOW if you put it in front of me. Recently we went there and they had some kind of "taco tuesday" deal going, but they didn't call it that. They serve you up a plate of about 5-6 mini tacos, each one different; could be I even had a lamb or goat taco, but they were all excellent. The meals on the kids menu are created with just as much care as the regular meals, and they usually provide crayons, so you can definitely take the whole family here. Just plain awesome, folks.

    This was well worth the drive. ( and anyone that knows me- I get lost easily- so that says a lot!) Any time I go out with the SO, and he leaves happy is an A + in my book. Our server was great and very informative, he gave great suggestions- which I gladly took. Our food was perfect!

    This place has gotten everything perfectly down. The food is exceptionally good. The beer and wine list is simple and outstanding. The service and atmosphere are prefectly fine, but the focus here is on the food and drink, as it ought to be. Fried mozzarella appetizers are tasty and come with a superb red wine marinara. Shrimp and chorizo nachos are addictive. Soup here is always on point. Can we talk about the spinach salad with a goat cheese fritter? It was served with marinated onions, applewood bacon, house made croutons, and a truffled vinegarette. It was actually much better even than it sounds, came in a large portion, and cost only $8. How about a salad with beets, arugala, gorgonzola, walnuts, mandarin oranges, and balsamic vgrtte? Similarly outstanding. Burgers are the bomb. The venison chili makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The ribs are world class. Fish is perfect. Nothing is too costly here, and you'll definitely leave with a stomach filled to the brim with goodness.

    A cool joint on a lonely stretch of NW Indiana road that might easily be missed by those buzzing by on their way to the Indiana Dunes or the SW Michigan beaches. Halfway between trendy bistro and rustic lakehouse, the vibe seems perfect for this somewhat upscale enclave of NW Indiana. Food is very solid and well-presented. It seems clear that many of the sauces, sides, etc. are house-made and it shows. While the baby backs were tasty and the sauce divine, I was a little disappointed that the ribs didn't taste smoked, the hallmark of true barbecue. Then again, there are plenty of places who bring in the masses with grilled ribs and this is no exception. The bar area on one side of the restaurant is a nice separate little area for a cocktail or a beer. I consider myself a bit of a beer snob and this place delivers with several selections from local and national craft brews. Definitely worth a very short detour to try this place out on your next trip between Chicago and SW Michigan.

    Gastro Pub! I finally get the term. My husband and I have driven past Bartlett's a hundred times and wondered why no one has opened it. Now we know - it was waiting for the right person to come along and love it and nurture it and serve amazing food! We stopped for lunch. Mom had the crab cake sandwich ($13). It was served with a side and she choose the shoestring potatoes. The crab cake was huge. The tartar sauce was okay. Shoestring potatos - WOW!!! A fried green tomato accompanied the crab cake and was incredible! Bartlett's serves fried green tomatos as an appetizer and next time we're ordering it! We shared a house salad with blue cheese dressing ($5.50). It was done well with spring green mix and pine nuts. I had the pasta special - Penna, with tomatoes, garlic and huge sea scallops ($14). Excellent! The wine and beer list is extensive. There are several nice wines by the glass at $6 to $7.50. I enjoyed a Malbec for $6. It came in a small carafe and was a large pour. We asked for the check but made the mistake of asking the waiter to tell us what the desserts were. Got sucked in... and ordered the bourbon walnut pie ($5). It was served a bit too cold but had an nice chocolate-carmel swirl on the plate. The restaurant is not sophisticated in decor. The woods are mixed in a manner that is odd - oak and walnut and a dark stained... maybe pine?. The ladies room was not terribly pleasant - it could be more upscale with little effort but is not. The outside has an odd looking wooden structure around the door to block the weather. It would have been nice if the waiter would have pointed out the wine specials when I ordered. The staff was very attentive and the plates and flat wear were upscale. Bartlett's is an incredible find in the Dunes. I am looking forward to visiting frequently.

    Stopped here to get out of the rain down on the dunes... I wasn't hungry, so ordered a Bloody Mary-the garnish was an olive, sausage slice, pickle, celery and green bean-practically a meal. The rest of my party all LOVED their food and the service was great! Stop here to get cozy and have a lovely meal with friends and family. You won't be disappointed! We plan to come back and take advantage of their outdoor seating which was closed due to the rain. Also, next time I'll come HUNGRY!

    I've been enjoying Bartlett's for about a year now and this review is long overdue. Bartlett's is my ideal restaurant....food & drink quality/service usually found in Chicago with the laid back atmosphere of the Indiana Dunes area. It's best described as an upscale road side diner. Since the beach is a little over a mile down the road don't be surprised in the summer to see people in swim attire grabbing a bite to eat before heading home. As for the food and drink you'll be hard pressed to find better quality in NW Indiana. They have an extensive microbrew beer/wine selection and according to my wife one of the best chocolate martinis in the area. In the summer she says the same about their Patron Margarita. Their excellent food covers both ends of the spectrum. Starting off with simple (easy for me to say!) items like cherry wood smoked hot wings, sweet potato fries, or crab cakes will get you in an excellent state of mind to move onto the entree menu or one of the phenomenal daily specials. My favorite night of the week at Bartlett's is Monday which is "Asian Night". I find that they have the best sushi in NWI. I know, I know....sushi at a road side diner in the shadow of the Indiana Dunes. Trust me, you will not be disappointed. I could go on and on, but I'm trying to keep this review simple. Awesome food. Phenomenal drink list. Fun people. My only wish would be that the bar was non-smoking. As the dining area is fairly tight it can get smoky if you get a lot of smokers in the bar. This is the only reason I'm not giving Bartlett's a 5-star rating.

    One of my favorite places, seriously, the place you take people from out of town. Great atmoshphere (especially if its nice enough to sit outside) but you don't feel like a jerk if you're not "Dressed up" casual is ok. Looks like a roadhouse, but has great creative food. Menu changes enough to keep it fresh. Love it, never had a bad meal there. Great drink/beer/wine menu. Close to Michigan City if you're out that way for the outlet mall, stop here after for lunch, its worth it.

    I have REALLY tried to love this this place - 3 times now. I keep returning in the hope that I will find something on the menu that works. It never happens. The food is VERY spice forward; so if you have a more refined palate you will quickly find yourself in trouble here. I'm no fan of bland, but neither am I a fan of overly salty or spicey foods. I still remember my encounter with their horribly over-the-top "gourmet meatloaf". The garlic was so intense, it overwhelmed the dish. The drink menu is, however, reasonably priced and expansive; but as my dinner companion noted as we left, "This would be great food for people who smoke a lot - it might resurrect those dead tastebuds!" With my mouth still afire and salty from the meal just finished, I had to agree.

    Had lunch for 6, of all ages. Excellent fair for the wilds of Indiana. Had Scot eggs of a different type than used to, not as good as Cupertino's Duke of Edinburoughs' Scot eggs. Liked the fellow eaters since friendly and approachable as the locals are. Compared our crustless pot pie with a neighbors crusted pot pie. We asked the waiter why our pot pie would be crust-less and he said that is the way there are; we got confused when neighbor's pot pie arrived with a crust. Probably they didn't have time to make the crust since early lunch time. Liked the kids drink cups have a straw for the beer drinking dear.

    Fun, comfortable-yet-gourmet place to stop for lunch or dinner on the way to, or from, Chicago or if you're planning on hiking around Indiana Dunes Lakeshore. You'll be driving along - seemingly in the middle of nowhere, and then there's Bartlett's. It's a drive off of the regular path, but SO worth it to actually have a memorable meal instead of some fast-food exit-ramp schlock. Great selection of classic pub/diner dishes with a twist: fresh mozzerella coated with panko and deep-fried with a light, fresh tomato sauce, shoestring fries with truffle salt, Nicoise salad with the tuna perfectly seared, beer-steamed mussels, etc. I also had a fantastic ceviche' here with blood oranges and fennel - the specials' board actually features interesting and new dishes instead of being the catchall for the cooks to use up items that are about to go off. Great steaks, sandwiches, tasty cocktails and an extensive beer selection. I HIGHLY recommend making a stop, the prices are low to moderate depending on if it's lunch/dinner and what you order. Decor is rustic, woodsy, and comfortable - can be a bit loud if you're hard-of-hearing.

    The atmosphere here is really cool, I thought! I love the way it's decorated - woodsy, modern. The food was pretty good too, even though I got all excited about a pretzel roll that they ended up not having. No big deal, though. The drawbacks are that the food is overpriced, and the clientele is primarily annoying - not that the restaurant has any control over the rich, loud Valpo women who go there and think they're cultured. At least, that was my experience both times I went. Go back to Panera! I'd return though- if I'm in the area and it's lunchtime and I take earplugs... har har har!

    I've seen this coming home to Michigan City a couple times, but never really paid any attention until a friend recommended it. We went there with a couple friends and absolutely loved the food and atmosphere. Way more hip then any spot you'll see in MC (not that MC doesn't have any gems, but you know what I mean right?). Food was on point especially the sweet potato fries smothered in short rib sauce. I think our whole group was pleasantly surprised with the experience. We'll definitely roll through again. Maybe after an exhausting day of shopping at Lighthouse Place..

    Went back with my brother's family to this place. Fish and chips were still good, but not as good as the first time. Other food was quite good. Service was not as good as it could be, but was OK. We sat outside which is very nice, except that there is a smell occasionally that comes by that is quite unpleasant.

    The battle wounds I suffered after eating at Bartlett's were totally worth it. A very large group of us arrived at Bartlett's on a Friday night. The place was packed and we did have a slightly long wait while they arranged a table for us, but the staff was polite and friendly. That helped. We were seated in the back section of the restaurant which was nice because it was away from all of the other diners, but a bit annoying as the mosquitoes were able to feast on all of us. And did. A lot. Barlett's may want to invest in some bug repelling candles since there is such limited seating indoors and ample seating outdoors. They are surrounded by trees and close to the lake which is very nice. Still. Citronella candles would have made the evening much more enjoyable. The waiter was kind enough to split up our checks separately and I know how much our group appreciates that. Also, big thumbs up to the waiter who allowed me to order the Chili Cheese Fries which were only on the lunch menu. Sweet potato fries with venison chili and Fair Oaks Farm cheese curds. Delicious doesn't begin to describe them. Finding fresh, gourmet and different food isn't easy in Northwest Indiana. And while Bartett's is a bit out of the way and really needs more indoor seating and more parking, it's well worth the visit. No one in our group complained about their food, the service was great and we had a blast together.

    I was a fan before I even stepped in because the arrival of Bartlett's means the dining options in Beverly Shores have gone from nothing to something. And after a half a dozen visits I'm glad to say that that something is pretty darn good. The food is tasty, with especially good crab cakes and a delightful beet salad; and the beer list features some great regional brews. The atmosphere is lively and casual and the decor is tasteful and woodsy. There is room for improvement, especially with the service which is a tad unfriendly and a little slow, but with the patio open and a screened in room nearly complete there are plenty of reasons to overlook the flaws and enjoy Beverly Shores' "something."

    Recently visited from out of town and had great food! We arrived with a group of 6 and had no problem seating us right away. My son is very picky and said he had the best chicken tenders here that he has ever had. I had a Black bean Burger with homemade chips that was very yummy and filling. My husband had a turkey sandwich with apples that he raved about! I would have gave them a 5 star but the staff was not very friendly. Thanks for the great lunch Bartlett's!

    Delicious food. Highly recommend the pot roast. Be ready for a wait though. As this is the only game in Beverly Shores, Bartlett's gets packed around dinner time. Well worth the wait though.

    I love this place. My husband and I have been coming here since it opened and it has yet to disappoint. We come in and generally sit at the bar so the bartenders recognize us and even remember our names! So right away we feel at home. The drinks are fantastic and the martinis at around $9 are made with top shelf liquor and are larger than normal. The beer on tap changes and the hubby seems to always find one he like/loves. The food is amazing as well. They have specials everyday and some of the days are themed like "Asian Night" so call if you are going or on the fence about going; it has changed our minds several times!!! The food seems very well crafted and I believe there is great care in preparing the dishes for ultimate flavor and experience. This place is very laid back and the atmosphere makes it welcoming for families but even more for couples and groups and even singles! However, in the spring/summer/fall the outdoor dining is ideal for absolutely everyone!! Regardless, the bartenders, servers, bussesr, hosts, and chefs will all take great care of you! One complaint....smoking in the bar! This place would only get that much better without smoke!! Update: No complaint anymore of course; no smoking!!! This place is awesome!!!

    If you're taking the scenic route along US 12, DO NOT PASS THIS BY! The food is amazing - gourmet americana. I almost always do soup and salad, because these specials are just too good to pass up. Last time we were there, my husband got a hamburger with short ribs on time. I snuck a bite of the short ribs. They literally melted in my mouth. Holy moley! Outdoor seating is nice, just be sure to catch a seat in the shade at lunchtime. They're actively combatting the bugs, so an evening meal al fresco in the woods would be tres romantic. I love the casual atmosphere, the service staff are friendly and extremely attentive.

    Love this place. I've been twice, and each time the food was top notch. And, it's a great, casual atmosphere...you can come in and have a really quality meal in a baseball cap and flip flops and be totally comfortable and happy. Most recently I had the steak frites. The molten chocolate cake with ice cream for dessert is fabulous. It's one of those local restaurants that make you really happy to have visited and patronized. I will be back whenever I am in the area.

    We've eaten here several times on our way out of the city and up to Lake Michigan. It's about an hour outside Chicago, so a great 1/2 way point if you're headed to the New Buffalo/Sawyer/Bridgman area. I've gottten the pot roast 3 times - it's delicoius and great if you're craving a hearty meal. My husband loved the ribs. Overall - we will definitely return!

    Based on reviews I decided that Bartlett's should be a stop during my wine and foods tasting trip to the Michigan City area. Much of the clientele that night was in their mid 30's to 40's with a few families scattered about with small children. The feel is more of a lounge-y type of restaurant although the seating is more dine and dash. If you're lucky to score a high table or seating within the bar, I think the seats are better for relaxing and enjoying the time. The place resembles an upscale pine lodge, the exterior has an uber sheik presence whereas inside is warm and quaint looking but falls to a more family style theme. Or maybe I felt this way because of the number of families there. It's like a dude's bachelor pad where he tries to keep one side of it sheik for dates and the other side family oriented. By no means is this a large place, one big room with two themes. Cost is above average with appetizers and salads around the higher single digits and entrees in the higher teens range. A dinner for two can easily go over fifty dollars. I was there just to nibble on a few appetizers and enjoy a couple drinks with my date and the bill came out to fifty bucks before tax and tip. Service was good. One thing worth mention, here and another food stop, the wait staff was weirded out when we told them that we were there only for drinks and appetizers. "No dinner" was a common reply followed by a stark look. I figure it may have to do with our waitresses trying to get good tips. But I say, as long as you treat your customers kindly and give them exemplary service they would reward that. At least I do. On this night they had a drink special on house Sangria which was strong but the quality of wine and taste, low. Notable menu items: Chili cheese fries made with venison chili and cheese curds, Surf and turf potstickers which must be eaten with the supplied red garnish. (Adding to it a spicy flavor, alone just blah.) And finally the Andouille sausage corndogs which had a creamy corn texture with every bite and tasty flavor surprise from the sausage within. The Bartlett's beer and wine menu is extensive, my attention was drawn to the beers. With some notables like Unibroue, Chimay, Boddington's, Newcastle and then some local and domestic micros like Goose island and Magic hat. While it's a bit too expensive for my liking, I could possibly return a few times for beers and appetizers again. For out of towners, the location is remote, I remember a long drive down a two way street through the forest. Locals drive fast, so keep aware.

    Sorry guys but I thought the food at best was mediocre. Don't get me wrong the service was great, the staff was extremely friendly, and the menu was fantastic. However, the food and bloody marys were simply ok. In all fairness to the restaurant I visited the restaurant on two occasions and both experiences were the same. On my first visit I ordered the Croque Madame sandwich and a "Buckin Good" Bloody Mary which I thought were ok. Finally, last night I had the lamb chops which were three small but thick medallions that had so much fat that I thought it was time to move on and continue my search for a favorite restaurant in the Northwest Indiana area.

    I went there last night with a group of three. My first impression was not a good one as I had to struggle to identify the hostess or someone who might help me get a table. After being told the wait would be 20 minutes, despite the fact that there were a number of empty tables that remained empty, I said sure and put our name on the list. The food was great. We had the breadstick trio, and mushroom flatbread both of which were very good. The olive dip in the breadstick dish was delicious. For entrees we had the mac and cheese (yum!), low-county shrimp (which I didn't try), and steak frites. The steak was cooked perfectly. We didn't try dessert but I'll be back!

    Whenever we stay at our beach house, we come here... I love it! The food is fresh and fantastic and the service is nice. If you can help it, try to snag a table on the patio in the summer... Yes, children will be here... most people are up with their familes... no one can mark a restaurant down for the clientele.

    Out of the way along route 12 between Gary and Michigan City, a great stop if you are looking to get out of traffic on 94!! modern, casual decor, nice deck for eating outside on nice days. A definite "gourmet" twist on traditional bar fare. I had the Pulled Pork, excellent! Could have been just a bit wetter, but the taste of the Michigan Cherry based barbecue sauce was terrific.

    I was fairly excited about going and then especially when I read over the menu...YUM! And that is where the fun ended. We seated ourselves as there was no one at the door. We then waited for a server for at least 15 minutes. The place was really not that busy. Plenty of empty tables on the patio and only a few tables with customers inside. It took another 20 minutes for them to take our order...of which I ordered Blue Point Oysters and a Nicoise salad. AN HOUR LATER I finally got the oysters which were accompanied with red wine mixed with water as the mignonette. I sent them back!!!! I finally asked the waiter for a manager and was informed that there really wasn't a manager, otherwise it would be the chef. The waiter then told me that for some reason it always takes a long time for the oysters. He told me he had to go back and beg for them. They have gone through staff turnover several times already this season, it was a new menu and the waiter had not tried many things (we don't get to eat for free here). Not going back. Should have left when I had the inclination. Bummer.

    The best bloody mary I've ever had and macaroni & cheese to die for. Can get very busy in the summer. Service was super. The pork taco (not actually what it is called) was fantastic. Have been here a few times and not a bad meal yet.

    These are the people who brought Gary one thing to be proud of in the last decade besides Hooters Air and the Gary Railcats; I'm talking about the people who brought you Miller Bakery Cafe (see Check Please!) and also Bistro 157 in Valporaiso. Bless these people for they have sinned. It has been several years since their latest restaurant opening and the good people of Northern Indiana became restless. They've been hauling it to Michigan City for their dinners out, some of them actually even gave up and stayed in. Well, after a lot of repentence they have done the good people of Northern Indiana a Hail Mary with their most recent restaurant - Bartlett's. Hol-y. It's been open just a few months and I kid you not, it's always busy. Always. And the season of summer rentals in Saugatuck and Douglas hasn't even begun yet - so the Chicagoans know nothing about Bartlett's. But they will, soon enough on their more scenic journeys on Route 12. They'll see the filled parking lot and wonder how they could've missed this one in the past. Then, my dear Indianny's you are done. They'll see the beer list, the venison dotted menu, the contemporary lodge decor, and it will all be over. I should know, I'm one of them. My husband and I visited Bartlett's not too long ago with great excitement for a new place to eat near Chesterton - Dune Acres. It's only a short drive and right near the Beverly Shores stop of the South Shore Line. Convenient if you know the times for the train - you could stop on your way back from Michigan. Anyway - very excited we entered the restaurant and saw that the locals were going to try and teach us who comes first. Don't worry, we happily slid past the wait line and sat ourselves in the bar area. Service took a while, but they were packed. They have a great beer list, including many locals like Bells and Great Lakes, etc - check the website. The menu was pretty good looking too - from the corndog sausage appetizers to the mac and cheese - or pulled pork and meatloaf entrees. We ate like ravenous pigs. Prices were really affordable, and I say really because the waitress forgot to charge us for some of our bill so I figured out on the way home. What a doll. Good for everyone - just have patience - they are super busy now, just wait til summer.

    The only reason the staff seems a bit unfriendly, and service a little slow, is BECAUSE of the patio and screened in room. The servers are stretched to the max EVERY night of the week. Yes, I said every. This is not a place to go to scarf down food, or if you are an ansy/anxious person. So either go eat at 2pm, or be ready for a wait. And check your attitude at the door, and so will the servers.

    Maybe I had too high of expectations when going here. I heard the food was great the chef has some other good places. Needless to say I was disappointed. The atmosphere was blah and the food, although pretty good, was not really good. The prices were way too expensive. For the cost of the meal, we should at least get more than a basket of crackers.

    Same owners as the former Miller Bakery Cafe. Grilled rainbow trout over asparagus with sweet potato was excellent. Entrees are not to expensive for the serving sizes.

    We had dinner here this past Friday evening for the first time. I loved it. I thought the food was fairly priced. Didn't see a lot of "rich Valpo women" there (who has this kind of animosity?) but did see a young, friendly crowd having a good time. We got right in and seated promptly. I was really happy to see the chef has a vegetarian selection each day. Unheard of in these parts and so welcome. I ordered a bloody Mary (living dangerously) and it was great. It came with a pickle, an olive and a venison stick that my waitress so gracefully removed for me. My husband had the chicken pot pie and said it was very good. At $14.50 for that plate, I'd say it is in line with other restaurants in the area I've gone to. I had the vegetarian option which was a glazed fettucine with baby asparagus - it was absolutely delicious. Our server did a great job of describing each dish and the specials. We shared a lovely banana bread pudding and the night was complete. It's not a large restaurant, that's true, but Gary Sanders and Nicole Bissionette are foodie legends in these parts and they've always put out great food in the past and this place is just as good as any restaurant they've owned before.

    Ed's 30 Second Restaurant Review - Resort Feeling, upscale family casual . Good food - Owners are Gary Sanders (Miller Bakery Cafe) and Nicole Bisonnette (Bistro 157), Gary was walking around, checking on tables and delivering food. Fun Atmosphere (it's cozy, we talked to the people next to us all night), Good wine pour by the glass. The Potato Chips with caramelized onions and goat cheese was a fun thing to order; I enjoyed the Whitefish. Next time, we're sitting outside on the deck. Only negative was parking was tight.

    I was very excited to try this place since I love the owners' other establishments. This one is so-so. We had the oysters, which were a bit of an oyster disappointment. Some were ok, others were very small. For $20 for a dozen, none should be small. Then we had the friend green tomatoes. They were severely undercooked and seasoned and tasted weird with the sweet salsa. Our entrees, on the other hand, were all good. The shrimp and grits were delish. My son had the wings which were smoky and salty and spicy, really really good. The burger was also good. I was bummed that I did not leave wanting to plan my next trip back. The menu is sooo all over the place too. It seems to be trying to be up scale, wild game slash not up scale asian and french twist. Just weird. Potstickers, pickles, steak frites and pot roast all on the same menu with deer chili and elk sticks. Kinda odd.

    Probably the best retaurant in NW IN. I went to Miller Bakery about 15 years ago around when it first opened. I remembered it was good, but I've never been back. This place is great. It's true the parking lot is very crowded, and also mostly unpaved. The front doors look like they were just put on. You walk in and the 5 seat or so bar is immediately there on the right. Didn't get to see the back deckl/porch or whatever. Fairly small interior, a mix of booths, picnic-like table and high back chairs. Beer menu is not that big, but has very good choices. Best looking thing of all was the bar snack menu. Entire menu is quite good, you will no doubt see several things on there you would like to try. Uh, Jennifer G. - it's called eclectic, not "weird". My beef brisket was good, with those little microscopic pomme frites-like fries. The mac and cheese is good too. Definelty reasonabale pricing is a solid plus. I didn't notice any service problems whatsoever; maybe they have overcome them by now. Just a nice, somewhat secluded place out in the Dunes with high quality food and beer. Exceptional for northwest Indiana.
